Simply explained, quickly clarified:
the requirements of EN 1004-1

Standards are recognized rules of technology and contain specifications for the manufacture and testing of products. The European standard EN 1004-1 applies to mobile working platforms and mobile towers. The latest version of this standard came into force on 01.02.2021. Since the transition period, which ran until 30.11.2021, manufacturers may only place mobile towers on the market that comply with the current version if they indicate conformity with the standard.

Standard specifications for mobile towers

Good to know in detail

  • Scope of the standard

EN 1004 used to apply only to mobile working platforms and mobile towers with a standing height of 2.50 meters or more. Now there are no longer any restrictions with regard to the minimum standing height. The standard also covers small mobile towers.

EN 1004 applies to mobile working platforms and mobile towers with a standing height of 0 meters or more.

  • Safe assembly, conversion and dismantling

According to EN 1004, mobile working platforms must be designed in such a way that they can be assembled, modified and dismantled without the need for personal fall protection. This means that continuous side protection must be provided at every stage of assembly or dismantling. It must therefore be possible to attach guardrail sections and braces for the next level using one of the following methods:

    • from the ground
    • from the platform below
    • through the trapdoor of the platform
    • (3T method “through the trapdoor”)

Safe assembly, modification and dismantling with continuous side protection must be ensured.

  • Maximum platform distance

To reduce the risk of falling during assembly, disassembly and when climbing the mobile tower, the distance between two platforms must not exceed 2.25 meters. The lowest platform may be used at a maximum height of 3.40 meters.

    Platform distance max. 2.25 meters.

First platform at max. 3.40 meters height.

  • Static requirements

To increase the stability of mobile working platforms and mobile towers, EN 1004 specifies precise requirements for structural calculations. The manufacturer's ballasting specifications must be observed.

The manufacturer's specifications for ballasting mobile towers must be observed during use.
