EUROPEAN STANDARD EN 1004
Quick overview: EN 1004-1
Standards are recognised rules for technology and contain specifications for manufacturing and testing products. European Standard EN 1004 applies to mobile towers. A new version of this standard came into force on 1 February 2021. Since the transitional period, which ran until 30 November 2021, manufacturers may, when referring to conformity with the standard, only market mobile towers that comply with the current version.

Applicability of the standard
In the past, EN 1004 only applied to mobile work platforms and mobile towers from a standing height of 2.50 metres. There are now no longer any restrictions on the minimum standing height. The standard also covers small mobile towers.
EN 1004 covers mobile towers and mobile scaffolds from a standing height of 0 meters.
Safe assembly, conversion and dismantling
Under EN 1004, mobile work platforms must be designed so that they do not require the use of personal fall protection equipment during assembly, conversion or dismantling.
Safe assembly, conversion and dismantling with continuous side protection must be ensured.
Maximum platform distance
To reduce the risk of fallling during assembly, disassembly and climbing on the mobile tower, the distance between two platforms may not exceed 2.25 metres.

First platform at max. height of 3.40 metres.
Structural design requirements
To increase the stability of mobile work platforms and mobile towers, EN 1004 provides precise regulations for calculating the structural design. The manufacturer's ballast specifications must be observed. The manufacturer’s specifications for ballasting mobile towers must be observed during use.
Changes to the manufacturer’s ballasting requirements for mobile towers must be complied with for their use.
